Daniel R. Lucey MD, MPH is a renowned international epidemics expert and public health physician who has been continuously tracking and assessing infectious disease threats for 40 years.
Daniel R. Lucey MD, MPH is a renowned international epidemics expert and public health physician who has been continuously tracking and assessing infectious disease threats for 40 years.
Dr Lucey’s proven risk assessments and forecasts provide foresight into the local to global trajectory of outbreaks and the corresponding demand for essential medical countermeasures.
Daniel Lucey, MD, MPH, FIDSA, FACP, is a clinical professor of medicine at Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine who teaches about epidemics at The Dartmouth Institute and is an anthropology research associate at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C.
He travels to outbreaks overseas including hands-on Ebola patient care in Sierra Leone and Liberia in 2014 (Doctors Without Borders), MERS (Qatar, UAE and Jordan in 2013), SARS in China and Toronto in 2003, HIV/AIDS (1982-1985 in San Francisco), H5N1 in Indonesia and Egypt, Zika (Recife, Brazil), yellow fever in 2016 (Kinshasa, DRC) and pneumonic plague in 2017 (Madagascar with WHO/USAID/CDC).
Dr. Lucey teaches several courses in the MALS Program, including Mals 373: Epidemics: Vortex of Fear and Wisdom
Reflections on patients, policies, pan-epidemics, prose and medical humanities from a 40-year career fighting epidemics around the world by an infectious disease public health physician. Examples include HIV/AIDS, Anthrax, SARS, MERS, H5N1 and H1N1 influenza, Nipah, Ebola (with MSF 2014), Zika, Plague (with WHO 2017) and COVID-19. Working side-by-side with international colleagues to provide hands-on patient care and to share stories is an expression of medical humanities.
