Daniel Lucey MD, MPH is a Clinical Professor Medicine at Dartmouth Geisel Medical School, and Anthropology Research Associate at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. He is an infectious disease-public health physician who has traveled each year since 2003 to epidemics e.g., SARS (China and Canada), MERS (Middle East and S. Korea), Ebola (with Doctors without Borders 2014 in Monrovia), Zika 2016 (Brazil), Avian Flu (Vietnam, Indonesia, Egypt), Yellow Fever 2016 (DRC), Chikungunya 2016 (Pakistan), Pneumonic Plague 2017 (with WHO in Madagascar), and COVID-19. In 2014 he originated the Exhibit on Epidemics at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in DC, with the theme “One Health”. It was open 2018-2022, and had over 3 million visitors. In 2023 he created a class online at Coursera.org with 32 videos titled, Reflections from 40 years of Fighting Epidemics.
Since December 30, 2020 he has followed the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic closely. Begining January 6, 2020 wrote over 160 blogs on both COVID-19 and more than a dozen other infectious disease outbreaks worldwide, for the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA) Science Speaks website. February 11-28, 2020 he traveled to Shanghai and Hong Kong.
On July 20, 2023 he gave an invited talk at the the Beijing Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, on 6 epidemics from 1982-2017. Afterwards, he visited Wuhan. Dr. Lucey teaches courses about epidemics at The Dartmouth Institute, and about epidemics and medical humanities at the Dartmouth College MALS program. From 2001-2022 he taught about epidemics at Georgetown University in DC.
He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1977, and from Dartmouth Medical School in 1982 (from October 1977-May 1978 he backpacked across Europe, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India). He trained in Medicine at UCSF (1982-1985), and Infectious Diseases/MPH at Harvard (1985-1988). He worked at the NIH as an Attending Physician in the 1990s. From 1998-2002 he led the ID Service at the Washington Hospital Center in DC where he helped treat Pentagon survivors of 9/11 on the burn unit, and helped lead the regional response to the anthrax attacks. He published 6 book chapters on anthrax and went to Russia to meet with doctors involved in the 1979 anthrax outbreak.
In July, 2019 he co-authored an OpEd in the Washington Post with Ron Klain on the Ebola epidemic in the DRCongo. In July, 2020 the New York Times published an interview he gave on the origin of COVID-19 titled, “8 Questions from a Disease Detective on the Pandemic’s Origins”.
